There was an infestation in May, shortly after we were married, of these gross-looking bugs. The great cicada infestation lasted about six weeks. The bugs emerge from the ground, creating holes in the grass, and then shed their skins. The cicadas carry on noisily during daylight hours, making it hard to be outside or even to concentrate inside at times. They mate and die. Their eggs hatch in trees and the nymphs drop to the ground and burrow in, to emerge 17 years later.
